Dr. Jerry May

Title:  The Hidden Secret of Success: The Fun Factor

Jerry R. May graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Western Washington State University, attended the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Bowling Green State University.  He completed his internship at the Family Study Unit at the V.A. Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA, and served as a Psychologist in the U.S. Navy for three years. Dr. May was Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (1974-2005) and Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs (1976-2003) at the School of Medicine, University of Nevada, Reno. He is a Fellow of Division 47 of the American Psychological Association and has served as a member of the Counsel of Representatives of the APA.

Dr. May’s teaching, consulting and clinical interests include behavioral medicine, sport psychology, stress and coping, medical education, and business management. He was appointed  the First Director of Sport Psychology of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Squaw Valley, Ca. (1977-1980), and worked with elite athletes and coaches in several different sports.  He was the Sport Psychologist and a member of the Sports Medicine team with the U.S. Alpine Ski team from 1979-1992, and a member of the U.S.O.C. Sports Medicine Council (1988-1992).  Dr. May was the designated U.S.O.C. Sport Psychologist to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, where he worked with over 100 different Olympic athletes and coaches as a member of the Sports Medicine team.  He has been the Sport Psychologist for U.S. Sailing from 1992 to present, and also worked with the 1998 US World Cup Soccer Team. Additionally, he has worked with elite athletes and coaches of sports ranging from professional tennis, National Football League, professional golf, diving, swimming, biathlon, figure skating, rock climbing and ultra distance running.  

In addition to sport, Dr. May has provided consultation and workshops regarding management training, high level achievement, executive coaching, teambuilding, leadership skills, wellness, fun in the workplace, strategic planning, and succession planning.  He has worked with organizations in the fields of accounting, banking, construction, finance, food, gaming, insurance, information technology, judicial systems, law, medicine, and retail. He has also been a faculty member at the National Judicial College (1983-present), teaching judges from across the United States regarding judicial decision making, stress and wellness.

Dr. May has over 60 publications in the area of medical education, sport psychology and behavioral aspects of disease.  He has appeared on ABC Sports, ABC Good Morning America, Nightline News, The McNeil-Lehr News Hour, CBS Sports, NBC News, BBC and others.  He has been interviewed by many national magazines and newspapers including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Time magazine, U.S. News and World Report, Sports Illustrated, Readers Digest, Psychology Today, Web M.D., Ladies Home Journal, Esquire magazine, Cosmopolitan, Delta Airlines In Flight magazine and Conte Nast Sports for Women.

He and his wife Carolyn lived at Northstar-at-Tahoe (1977-2003), where they raised their three children. Currently, semi-retired, they live in the Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, Ca.


 

Dr. Robert SallisHealth and Exercise Psychology Keynote Presenter

Dr. Robert Sallis

Title:  Exercise is Medicine

Dr. Sallis currently serves as Immediate Past-President of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and chairs Exercise is Medicine™, a joint initiative of ACSM and the American Medical Association.  A great advocate of the health benefits gained through physical activity, he championed and helped launch Exercise is Medicine™, a program designed to fully support physician-prescribed exercise.  Dr. Sallis is a family physician practicing at Kaiser Permanente in Fontana, California for over 20 years.  He also serves as co-director of their sports medicine fellowship.

Dr. Sallis lectures and publishes extensively in the area of sports medicine.  A spokesperson for ACSM, he frequently provides his expertise and commentary on sports and health news and issues.  Among his professional awards, he recently received the 2008 Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Dr. Sallis received his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and his Medical Degree from Texas A&M University.  He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, CA in 1990, where he served as chief resident. He has been the head team physician at Pomona College since 1988 and is Board Certified in Family Medicine and also holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Sallis currently serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Current Sports Medicine Reports.  He is also Chair of the Science Advisory Committee for the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.


 

Dr. Ketra ArmstrongSocial Psychology Keynote

Ketra Armstrong

Title: Self and the Social Psychology of Sport Consumption.

Dr. Ketra L. Armstrong is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and the Director of the Graduate Program in Sport Management at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).  She teaches courses such as Foundations in Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Measurement & Statistics, and she supervises the Sport Management Capstone Projects.  She is also the President of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport and a member of the NCAA Scholarly Colloquium Committee.  Prior to CSULB, Dr. Armstrong was a tenured Associate Professor in Sport Management at The Ohio State University, where she also received her Ph.D.

Dr. Armstrong has conducted research throughout her career on the nuances of managing, marketing, and participating in sport.  Her research specialization is illuminating the social psychology of sport consumer behavior in general, and the sport behaviors of women and consumers of African descent in particular.  Her research has been featured in numerous journals:  Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, International Journal of Sport Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Sport Behavior, Journal of Sport and Social Issues, Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal, Journal of Black Psychology, Quest, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Academic Athletic Journal, The Black Coaches Association Journal, The Physical Educator, and Future Focus.  She co-authored an article that received the Outstanding Research Award by the Sport Marketing Association, she conducted research for Essence Magazine on Black Women’s Fitness, she received the Young Professional Award from the American Association of Active Lifestyle and Fitness, and she was recently inducted as a Research Fellow by the North American Society for Sport Management.
