About Certified Consultants
Applied sport and exercise psychology professionals are interested in how participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity may enhance personal development and well–being throughout the life span.
AASP Certified Consultants agree to abide by the AASP Ethical Code.
These professionals may provide a variety of services depending on their professional training. The most common services focus on:
- providing information about the role of psychological factors in sport, exercise, and physical activity to individuals, groups, and organizations. They may, for example, assist with exercise adherence, communication, teamwork, or program development and evaluation.
- teaching participants specific mental, behavioral, psychosocial, and emotional control skills for sport, exercise, and physical activity contexts. They might, for example, focus on relaxation, concentration, or the use of imagery.
Certified Consultants may work with a wide variety of participants in sport and exercise. Some examples include:
- group exercise leaders and personal trainers
- health club instructors and administrators
- exercise participants
- youth sport through elite level coaches and administrators
- youth sport, high school, college, and elite level athletes
- athletes with disabilities

A growing number of applied sport and exercise psychology professionals are certified by the AASP. These professionals—who earn the designation Certified Consultant, AASP (or CC, AASP)—have met a minimum standard of education and training in the sport sciences and in psychology. They have also undergone an extensive review process. The AASP certification process encourages applied sport and exercise psychology professionals who complete it to maintain high standards of professional conduct while giving service to others.
All Certified Consultants, AASP agree to support the objectives of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and abide by the provisions of its ethical code.
