PPUMP – Proactive Peer Undergraduate Mentoring Program

The objective behind PPUMP is threefold: 1) to create a list of graduate students who are competent and willing to serve as mentors for their peers and prospective students as they search for graduate programs that best fit their needs; 2) allow students to assist and collaborate with other sport and exercise psychology students interested in similar research topics and applied experiences; 3) inform undergraduates about AASP and applied sport and exercise psychology.

PPUMP, is currently in the process of making contacts to deliver presentations informing undergraduate students about AASP and applied sport psychology. This program will primarily be targeting students who have not had any exposure to applied sport psychology such as psychology undergraduate students and students at small colleges and community colleges. By becoming involved with this project you stand to benefit in two ways. First, you will be getting an opportunity to represent the field of applied sport and exercise psychology and AASP in addition to being allowed to hone your public speaking and presentation skills and get another presentation on your resume. We already have a presentation designed, thus all you would have to do is initiate the contact and set up the time and place.

Internship Database

As students progress through their Masters and Doctoral programs, many are interested in seeking out experiences that will allow them to not only gain hands-on applied sport psychology experiences, but to help complete the required internship hours for becoming a certified AASP consultant. A list of internships is currently being created and will soon be available on the website. Contact Chris Bader if you know of an internship experience or if you would like the current list of internship sites.

Graduate Program Fair

The program fair provides a friendly environment for prospective students to learn more about the schools they are interested in by interacting with students and faculty members. Additionally, information regarding committees and special interest groups, which students can join, will be presented at the program fair. Please contact Justin Klug if you have questions or are interested in helping out with the program fair.

Student Leadership Pool Registry

The Student Leadership Pool Registry is a vehicle by which AASP can identify past and present student members who have made significant leadership contributions to the organization. Once they are identified, the Executive Board of AASP plans to offer these student members training to further develop their leadership skills. The goal is to groom the potential future officers and committee chairs of AASP to assume these important leadership positions.

New Member Welcoming Committee (a.k.a. Hospitality Committee)

The goal of the committee is to help new student and professional members feel welcomed into AASP, especially at the conference. We will assist students in maximizing their conference experience and help establish networking activities for the new student and professional members.

ALAS – Across Land and Sea: International Promotion of AASP

Currently, Calum is working on increasing the visibility of AASP in the UK by creating links with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) at the student level. For example, AASP flyers will now be included in delegate packs at the BASES annual conference. Contact Calum for further information on how to get involved and promote AASP in the UK and surrounding regions.

Anikahas created an Australasian Student Member Booklet for all AASP student members in the Australasia region containing photos, bios, and research topics. This allows everyone in Australia, New Zealand and Asia to become more familiar with colleagues in the region and encourage networking. Contact Mankaad  for more information.

Step Forward

The intent of this project is to get students in the field and particularly those involved in AASP to "step forward" and explain to others why they became interested in sport and exercise psychology. This will hopefully attract new student members and enhance a sense of relatedness among current members. This process will also serve to (a) improve self-awareness among those that volunteer their story and (b) facilitate developmental transitions to leadership positions within our organization. Please contact Sean Mullen (sean.mullen@virginia.edu) if you wish to Step Forward!

Student Website Committee

The purpose of this committee is to work together to increase online visibility of student-initiatives and contributions to AASP. Student regional representatives and other students from all over the world have made a joint effort in this endeavor.
