Marty Ewing

Dr. Marty Ewing is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University where she was a member of the volleyball and basketball teams.  She received her Masters of Science degree in athletic administration and her Ph.D. degree in sport psychology from the University of Illinois. 

Marty’s research focuses on youth in sport with particular interest in why youth drop out of sports.  Her research has investigated athletes’ reasons for participating in sport as well as dropping out.  In addition, she has investigated issues that influence the experience of youth in sport, namely, the declining number of women coaches at the high school and college level, athlete’s definitions of sportsmanship, children’s views of enjoyment and fitness, parental pressure, and early specialization.  She has published her work in refereed journals and book chapters and has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences as well as the state and local levels.  She has mentored numerous doctoral and masters students who have gone on to make significant contributions as faculty members and leaders in the field.

Marty is currently serving as Past President of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.  She has served as Publications Director and numerous other committees within AASP.  She has also served as President of the Youth Sport Coalition Executive Committee. She is a member of the Sports Medicine Team at Michigan State University where she has worked with numerous teams and individual athletes.  She assumes the duties of Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology in the Fall. 

In her past life, Marty coached women’s volleyball, basketball, and tennis at the collegiate level.  She was a nationally rated official for basketball and volleyball.  She has been actively involved in the development and delivery of coaches’ education materials while a member of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University.
