Mission Statement
The Performance Excellence Movement (PEM) is designed to increase student, practitioner, and public awareness of the application of sport psychology skills in other performance contexts. PEM also serves to increase awareness, knowledge, and skill set in relation to how sport and exercise psychology expertise can be effectively applied in a number of domains. The hope of PEM is to provide readers with interesting information about how some of our colleagues successfully apply their sport psychology techniques to areas other than sport.
Objectives
The objectives of PEM are as follows:
- Bi-yearly publication of a PEM newsletter dedicated to exploring the use of performance enhancement skills in unique settings
- Increased AASP student member involvement in student initiatives through submission of articles for each PEM newsletter
- Recognition of AASP student and professional members’ contributions to the sport psychology field through member profiles in each newsletter
- Inclusion of evidence-based practice or peer-reviewed research wherever possible
- Distribution of the PEM newsletter to a broad audience, including AASP regional representatives, the AASP website, and appropriate non-AASP forums
PEM Goals for 2006-2007
Before the 2007 AASP National Conference, the PEM would like to create and distribute two new versions of the newsletter, according to the following tentative cycles:
- Newsletter #1
- November 2006: Identification of the general topic area, 3-4 relevant article topics, and potential candidates for student and professional member profiles; call for student contributions
- December 2006 & January 2007: Receipt of student contributions, writing of member profiles
- February & March 2007: Selection of articles to be included, editing, formatting, and distribution
- Newsletter #2
- May 2007: Identification of the general topic area, 3-4 relevant article topics, and potential candidates for student and professional member profiles; call for student contributions
- June & July 2007: Receipt of student contributions, writing of member profiles
- August & September 2007: Selection of articles to be included, editing, formatting, and distribution

History of PEM
- The PEM was originally established in 2001 by Robert Fazio and Michelle Coleman with the goal of increasing, “awareness, knowledge, and skill set in relation to how sport and exercise psychology expertise can be effectively applied in a number of domains.” The newsletter was originally known as the PEP (Performance Excellence Program) and was a joint venture with APA Division 47. After a hiatus between 2003 and 2005, the PEM completed it’s most recent issue in 2006.
