Moms in Sport

Mission

The Moms in Sport Special Interest Group (SIG) is committed to deepening understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities experienced by mothers working throughout the sport sector. We recognize that motherhood intersects with professional, performance, and organizational demands in ways that are often overlooked and that systemic issues in our broader context impact these spaces. Our aim is to elevate these experiences, inform supportive practices, and contribute to a sport environment where motherhood and high performance can coexist.

Drawing on existing research, emerging scholarship, and lived experience, this SIG focuses on two primary areas:

  1. Practitioner Moms in Sport We seek to identify the challenges, barriers, and sources of fulfillment experienced by mothers working in practitioner roles. Through shared dialogue and evidence informed insights, we aim to highlight both the pressures and the strengths that motherhood brings to these roles, and to explore strategies that enhance wellbeing, career sustainability, and professional growth.
  2. Mothers in Coaching, Athletic, and Support Roles We also aim to better understand and support mothers who participate in sport as coaches, athletes, and allied support staff. By synthesizing current knowledge and encouraging new inquiry, we work to identify effective strategies that enable these mothers to thrive in their roles while navigating the demands of parenting.
