Process-Based Therapy (PBT) in Sport and Performance

Mission

The Process-Based Therapy (PBT) in Sport and Performance SIG is dedicated to advancing the integration of PBT principles into sport and performance contexts. Process-Based Therapy is a theoretical framework that is a natural expansion of person-centered approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Process-Based Therapy explores the underlying mechanisms of behavior that drive psychological and performance difficulties. This SIG brings together mental health professionals, sport performance consultants, and researchers who seek to apply evidence-based, process-oriented approaches to enhance both well-being and performance in athletes. The SIG provides a professional community for those interested in exploring how PBT—through its flexible, individualized, and process-driven framework—can develop psychological flexibility, resilience, and motivation in athletes. Key objectives include: (1) Promoting applied research and knowledge exchange on PBT interventions in athletic populations; (2) Supporting practitioners in tailoring process-based strategies to address performance anxiety, burnout, injury recovery, team dynamics, and identity transitions; and (3) Creating a collaborative network for interdisciplinary learning between mental health professionals, sport performance consultants, and researchers.
