Student Representatives’ Message

Stacy Gnacinski, M.S., University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Joanna Foss, M.A., University of Missouri

Happy Summer 2017 student members! AASP continues to work diligently in expanding the value of AASP student membership and in creating opportunities for student engagement within the organization. As we enter the middle stages of the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan, we are excited about the progress that has been made thus far and hopeful for continued momentum through the second half of the current cycle. As you will read below, several steps have been taken in recent months that may be of interest to current students.

Student Initiatives

Your Student Representatives are continually pursuing initiatives to develop content and resources for students about the field of applied sport psychology, including the Best Practices in Research, Best Practices in Consulting, and Undergraduate Connections Initiatives. View existing documents and resources created for students by students here.

New! Social Justice Initiative. With the current round of student delegates, the creation of a new initiative targeting issues of social justice and advocacy was proposed. The overall mission and vision of this initiative is currently being developed, so stay tuned for further information on this initiative in the near future. If you have ideas for new initiatives that may be of benefit to students, consider getting involved and making suggestions!

AASP 2017 Annual Conference

The AASP 2017 Annual Conference, held from October 18-21, in Orlando, FL, is a great opportunity to network with others in the field, expand your knowledge about sport psychology domains, and engage in professional development opportunities. This year, in alignment with the AASP Strategic Plan, there will be two professional development workshops offered specifically for students. Stay tuned for conference previews! In addition to the student-focused workshops, we will be rolling out a new and improved Student Challenge Initiative.

Resources for Students

One way to make the most out of your membership is to become aware of and use the resources available to you as an AASP member. Stay up to date on current research in the field through accessing numerous journals published by AASP, including The Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport Psychology in Action, and Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Visit the Membership Benefits and Students’ Center for more information about available resources.

The Graduate Program Directory (11th edition) remains a top resource for students looking to gain information about graduate training opportunities in the field of applied sport psychology. Students can purchase either a physical copy of the book or gain online access to the Directory information. Get further information about the Graduate Program Directory here.

New! Career Center. We are excited to announce that the new AASP Career Center was launched on AASP’s website and can be accessed here. Check regularly for job postings and use the resources to guide your career search process. Resources include resume writing tips, interviewing suggestions, guidance on advancing your career, and advice for making the most of digital resources like social profiles and networking sites.

See the Students’ Center webpage for additional AASP student member benefits and resources!

Get involved!

There are several ways to get involved and make the most of your AASP membership. Annual and regional conferences are great opportunities to network with other members of the organization. Students can also consider joining Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in their areas of interest. Also, join the virtual conversation on Facebook by requesting access to the AASP Student Facebook Group! This group is a resource for student members only, so if your full name is not visible on Facebook, please send a direct request for access to Stacy or Joanna at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org.

If you have suggestions about improving student membership, feedback about your experiences within the organization, or interest in becoming more involved in the organization, please contact Stacy or Joanna at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and look forward to connecting with other student members.
