May & June Diversity Announcements

Greetings AASP!

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Asian Pacific Heritage Month! Learn about a current doctoral student and the current status of mental health among student-athletes. Also, check out an athletic trainer’s view of mental health in athletes and ways sport psychologists can help. Celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month by reading about Lillian Copeland, who is known as one of the greatest discus throwers of all time. Take some time to learn about the Maccabiah Games and the record number of athletes who competed in the 2017 games. In recognition of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, learn more about the achievements of notable Asian, Pacific American athletes like Michelle Wie, Marcus Mariota, Devin Setoguchi, and Sammy Lee.

Additionally, in May, we also celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (May 17) plus World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (May 21). For International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, learn more about AthleteAlly, an organization that helps student-athletes feel safe and supported regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

June is Pride Month, and Men’s Health Month! Learn about what a professional sports team did to celebrate Pride. Also, celebrate Pride month by reading about trans women in sport. June 29th is LGBT Pride Day. Check out LGBTSportSafe and its Student-Athletes leading the Charge for Change (SAAC) campaign. Learn how strongman Rob Kearney became even stronger by coming out. For Men’s Health Month, gain some insight into preventable men’s health issues and concerns. Also, in June we spotlight International Men’s Health Week. Learn what various organizations are doing to raise awareness.
