May & June Diversity Announcements

Sponsored by the AASP Diversity Committee and Student Social Justice Initiative

May is chock full of reasons to celebrate diversity! In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, review this variety of NCAA resources to help better support the mental health and wellness of student-athletes. Celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month through the history of the Maccabi Games and learn how the organization provides Jewish athletes around the world the chance to share their heritage and customs in competitive athletic settings. May is also Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Bustle spoke with eight Asian American athletes including figure skater Mirai Nagasu and Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Lia Neal about what it took to rise to the top of their game and what it means to them to be representing their communities. On May 17 we celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia. Learn about the work being done by Athlete Ally, an organization working toward equal access, opportunity, and experience in sport regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

In June we celebrate Pride Month and recognize great organizations supporting the LGBTQ community in sport including Pride in Sport, LGBT SportSafe, and You Can Play. June is also National Caribbean American Heritage Month and Men’s Health Month.

The 2020 AASP Student Social Justice Forum and IGNITE Program will also take place on June 3 from 1-3 pm ET. Interested in participating? Register at embracediversityinsport.org by Friday, May 22.
