(WIN)ning for Strong Girls: Partnering with a Local Nonprofit to Provide an After-School Program for Local Middle School Aged Girls

Strong Girls was a successful after-school program provided by the University of Kansas Sport and Exercise Psychology Lab (KUSEPL) that helped develop the leadership and life skills of local elementary girls in the area, while also engaging the girls in physical activity. Based in Achievement Goal Perspective Theory and a Caring Framework, one to three girls were paired with women at the University of Kansas who received training in how to create a caring and task-involving climate, as research has demonstrated that such a climate can have numerous positive effects (Fry, & Hogue, 2018). However, despite the success and growing popularity of Strong Girls, the program ended in 2012 as it became hard for the KUSEPL to maintain on their own. The KUSEPL has a long-standing relationship with WIN for KC (Women’s Intersports Network for Kansas City), a local non-profit who is dedicated to empowering the lives of women and girls through sport. WIN for KC currently sponsors a number of local community events for girls, including Camp WIN, a week-long sports summer camp for girls. WIN for KC is looking to expand on Camp WIN by providing a year-round after-school program for middle school aged girls and, with the help of the KUSEPL, are wanting to use Strong Girls as the blueprint for their plan. While WIN for KC has the infrastructure as well as the funding resources to sustain and grow Strong Girls, they are in need of a group and program that can provide high-quality curriculum and training, something that the KUSEPL can provide. The purpose of this grant proposal is to request additional funds to support the KUSEPL and WIN for KC partnership in restarting the Strong Girls Program.
