Description

Session length is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Speakers
Ed Etzel, EdD, CMPC, West Virginia University
Brandonn Harris, PhD, CMPC, Georgia Southern University

Overview
Objectives of the webinar include (a) providing participants with a brief overview of AASP's Ethics Code and associated values, (b) presenting an overview of selected challenging ethical issues commonly encountered within teaching, research, and practice environments, (c) presenting and providing case examples of the integration and application of an ethical decision-making model to assist professionals in navigating ethical dilemmas, and (d) providing an opportunity for participant questions and concerns that can be addressed at the conclusion of the webinar.

Participants will be introduced to the structure and core content of the ethics code to include its Principles and Standards. Because AASP members encounter regular ethical challenges in their work lives, having an understanding of the underlying values of the code is essential to understanding and applying its guidance in day-to-day work settings. Examples of common, selected issues will be discussed with some brief case examples. Selected topics to be addressed will include confidentiality, competence, and boundaries [multiple relationships]. Participants will also be introduced to a practical decision-making model useful to assessing the nature of ethical challenges as related to the code and steps to consider following when making an ethical decision. Finally, the presenters will respond to questions participants raise through the moderator of the webinar.
