Overview
The culture of intercollegiate athletics is an extremely demanding one. The pressures on student-athletes to succeed are higher than they've ever been with no relief in sight. Individual and team performances are viewed by many and, thanks to technology, often questioned and criticized publicly.  As a result, mental health and wellness has been identified by student-athletes as both a primary challenge and concern. Over the past few years, the NCAA has made it a primary focus to better understand and support student-athlete mental wellness. According to Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline, the NCAA has been increasingly engaged in trying to educate its member institutions so that important information and resources can made available to athletes. So what role does sport psychology play in an integrated delivery model of mental health services to student-athletes? The answer - a very important and strategic role and one that will be outlined and discussed during this session.

Our speakers, Jesse Steinfeldt and Carmen Tebbe Priebe, will share their perspectives on the following:

  • The importance of contextual awareness of the unique demands of student-athletes that allows sport psychology professionals to provide effective mental health services
  • The type of mental skills education aimed at improving performance and resiliency that is a critical supplement to enhance student-athlete well-being
  • Recognition and evaluating the "cultural" factors within an athletic program that might impact diagnoses and treatment planning
  • Examples of how sport psychology professionals have been able to plug in and become a valuable part of the provision of mental health services to student-athletes will be shared.
