Bio
Abby helps athletes improve themselves and their performance through mental skills coaching. She believes that we are all capable of achieving our version of success - and sometimes we need guidance and support along the way to develop new skills, strategies, and perspectives.
Abby has had the privilege of supporting hundreds of athletes with mental skills coaching since 2010, including youth, collegiate, age-group, and professional athletes ages 11 to 65. In her private practice, Intrepid Performance Consulting, LLC, she specializes in supporting teenage student-athletes (along with their parents or caregivers) as well as swimmers, runners, and triathletes ages 14 and up through online, one-on-one mental skills coaching.
Abby also serves as an Adjunct Faculty member and CMPC Mentor in the Sport and Performance Psychology Department at National University's JFK School of Psychology and Social Sciences, where she mentors graduate students in their pursuit of the CMPC credential.
Previously, Abby served as a Cognitive Performance Coach for US Army Special Operations Soldiers at Fort Bragg, NC. While there, she designed the cognitive training curriculum for the Psychological Operations Qualification Course, taught learning and memory strategies within the Special Operations Language and Combat Medic schools, and created team building events for operational units. She earned her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Georgia, M.S. in Educational (Sport) Psychology from Florida State University, and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) in addition to being certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Behavioral Health.
Abby commonly helps athletes build confidence, address negative thoughts and beliefs, enhance focus, manage nerves or anxiety around competition, learn from mistakes and poor performance, increase capabilities in time management and organization, plan and prepare for competition, and implement a clear process to achieve short- and long-term goals.
Outside of the field of sport psychology, Abby has gained experience in facilitation, team building, and leadership development through work with a youth development and substance abuse prevention non-profit, being a staff member for a summer youth leadership camp since 2009, and as a challenge course facilitator. She incorporates these elements into her work, integrating purpose, hands-on activities, various instructional styles, and reflection to make a lasting impact.
Abby believes in giving back to the field, and as such, she has served in a variety of roles within AASP, from chairing the Web Presence Committee (2018-2020), to participating in the development of the 2019-2022 and 2023-2026 Strategic Plans, to writing and reviewing exam questions for the certification exam, to reviewing and updating the CMPC Job Analysis, to being an active member of the Business Ownership and Study and Practice of Supervision Special Interest Groups. She currently serves as co-chair of the Webinars/Virtual Conference Committee. She has spoken and conducted workshops at state, regional, and national conferences on mental skills interventions, debriefing/reflection, entrepreneurship, supporting youth athletes, and CMPC mentorship. Additionally, she has been a contributing author for three textbooks and has been featured in a number of media appearances.
She lives with her husband, John, and two young boys in the greater Atlanta area, where they love getting outdoors and filling their home with music, good food, reading, and play time.
