AASP Position Statement on Human Diversity

The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) actively promotes the respect for and the value of human diversity within the organization and through the professional actions of its members. As an organization, we strive to promote inclusive environments characterized by respect, understanding, and acceptance of cultural similarities and differences through all aspects of our operation. As individual members, we are committed to our own continued growth around multicultural issues and are intentional about integrating diversity into all aspects of our work.  In recognition of these basic tenets, the AASP member:

  1. Demonstrates attitudes of dignity and respect, toward all colleagues, students, and clients regarding their individual and cultural diversity. Diversity broadly includes but is not limited to, age, ability status, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, national origin, race, religion/spirituality, sexual identity, socio-economic status, or other social identities and/or individual characteristics.
  2. Does not discriminate, either openly or subtly, on the basis of age, ability status, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, national origin, race, religion/spirituality, sexual identity, socio-economic status, or other social identities and/or individual characteristics.
  3. Does not make or tolerate remarks or inferences that reflect disrespect for individuals or groups based on age, ability status, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, national origin, race, religion/spirituality, sexual identity, socio-economic status, physical or cultural bias, or other social identities and/or individual characteristics, and takes steps to address and resolve situations if they become aware that a breach (inadvertent or otherwise) has been made.
