As Student Representatives, we continue to work diligently to represent the needs of AASP student members, enhance the value of student membership, and increase opportunities for student engagement within the organization. Part of this mission includes augmenting student involvement, particularly international student engagement, in accordance with the AASP Strategic Plan. Furthermore, we will continue disseminating information about potential career opportunities for students to pursue once they become early career professionals. Below are some additional updates and resources that may be of interest to our student member colleagues.
Student Delegates
A dedicated new group of 20 student delegates is working hard to develop content and resources of interest to student members and contribute to larger organizational needs. In an ongoing effort to improve student connection to AASP’s professional membership, student initiatives will be developed in collaboration with professional committees to meet the goals outlined in the new strategic plan. We have consolidated the Association for Applied Sport Psychology's Student Initiatives to provide even more support for professional committees. We are always looking for new ideas that could benefit student members, particularly international, minority, and indigenous students. If you have suggestions, consider reaching out to us at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org, contacting an initiative chair, or becoming a student delegate next year. You can find more information about getting involved on the AASP Student Delegates webpage.
AASP 2020 Annual Conference
Start planning for the 35th Annual Conference! We are very excited that the AASP Conference will be held on October 21-24, 2020 in Orlando, Florida, USA. The conference is an opportunity for students to learn more about research and applied work in sport psychology. It is also a great place to build professional networks with other students and established professionals in the field. Student-focused programming, events, and workshops will be available. More information about the AASP Annual Conference and the agenda will be posted online as the conference date approaches.
Become a conference abstract reviewer! Learn more about the evaluation process all while participating in a wonderful service opportunity with your association. To become a reviewer, log in to your AASP member portal and change your status in the “Reviewer Profile” page to “Yes, I can review abstracts for AASP 2020!”
Apply to be a student conference volunteer! Each year, AASP requests help from student members at the Annual Conference. Selected volunteers will receive a $100 gift card upon completion of service. If you're attending the Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, consider taking this opportunity to interface with professionals in the field, as well as other student members. To be considered, please indicate on your conference registration that you would be willing to volunteer. Closer to the meeting date, the chair of the Conference Planning Student Initiative will inform you if you were selected.
Resources for Students
An AASP student membership comes with beneficial resources such as access to AASP’s journals, the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport Psychology in Action, and Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Stay up to date on the latest developments in the field with these publications.
Submit your work! The Journal for Advancing Sport Psychology in Research (JASPR) is a new student-focused journal, accepting submissions this Spring. A call for manuscript reviewers is ongoing and open now. JASPR aims to expand the field of psychology in the domains of sport, exercise, and performance by publishing rigorous scholarship for students, academics, researchers, and applied practitioners. Specifically, JASPR provides students and early-career professionals aspiring to develop their scholarship skills with innovative opportunities to participate as authors, reviewers, and editorial board members within a mentored publishing infrastructure.
If you are in the process of looking for graduate training opportunities, check out the Directory of Graduate Programs in Applied Sport Psychology, which includes information on over 100 graduate training programs in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Use this resource to identify programs of interest and determine which may be best aligned with your career goals. Additionally, the Student Development Committee offers several video resources for sport psychology graduate students, including advice on choosing the right graduate program.
Regional Conferences
Network with other members of the organization during these cost-effective student conference experiences. Learn more about this year’s regional conference lineup in the AASP Event Center. Our 2020 hosts are Barry University, Illinois State University, Springfield College, California Baptist University, University of Denver, West Chester University, and Lewis-Clark State College. The recipient of the AASP Diversity in Sport Conference is the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Congratulations to all hosting institutions!
Host a 2021 AASP International Regional Conference
Are you a current AASP international student or professional member? Have you thought about hosting an AASP Regional Conference? You’re in luck! The Association for Applied Sport Psychology is looking for eager student members or professional members (who know of students looking to get involved) to consider hosting an AASP International Regional Conference. Previous conferences were held in Canada and the U.K. We’d love to spread the word about AASP and sport psychology across the globe!
To learn more about AASP’s Regional Conference grant, please contact the AASP Executive Board Student Representatives Julia Cawthra and Jorge Ballesteros at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org or International Relations Committee Chair, Dr. Jana Fogaca at fogacaj@uwgb.edu.
Get in touch! Please contact Julia and Jorge at the email above if you want to get involved in AASP, have questions about your membership, or if you have ideas about improving the student experience within AASP. We are excited to continue representing your needs and creating new opportunities for student members. We look forward to seeing you all in Orlando in October!
