Diversity Month Announcements - May & June

Greetings, AASP! May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Asian Pacific Heritage Month! Learn how some student-athletes are staying connected, breaking the silence, and supporting mental health efforts. Also, check out the @NCAA Sport Science Institute’s resources on mental health, and read USA Today’s article, “When athletes share their battles with mental illness”, featuring Brent Walker. Celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month and learn how baseball played an important role in Jewish American history by visiting http://chasingdreams.nmajh.org/. Also, learn about notable Asian Pacific American athletes and their achievements.

In May, we also celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (May 17), and World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (May 21). Learn how LGBT athletes made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and see how the UN is seeking to bridge the gap between cultures.

June is Pride Month, and Men’s Health Month! View information from Athlete Ally and the You Can Play Project to learn about ways you can raise awareness for LGBTQ advocacy in sport. For Men’s Health Month, learn how to raise awareness about preventable men’s health problems. June 15th is Native American Citizenship Day. In honor of this day, check out this article on Native American mascots in pro sports. June 19th is Freedom Day / Emancipation Day. Check out the Sport for Freedom project and learn how sport and fitness can be used as a preventative and educational tool among vulnerable communities. June 24th is LGBT Pride Day. Check out LEAP Sports and Stonewall Sports to see how these organizations promote LGBT inclusion in sport.
