Overview
This webinar, conducted by Black, female early-career sport practitioners, aims to delve into the unique mental health challenges and needs of Black athletes. Recognizing the intersectionality of race, gender, age, and professional identity, this webinar addresses how racial dynamics impact the mental health and wellbeing of Black athletes in competitive collegiate and professional sport environments.

Through a combination of research insights, practical strategies, and personal reflections, this presentation will provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities at the intersection of race, mental health, and sports. It is designed to be an enlightening experience for sport psychologists, coaches, athletic administrators, and anyone interested in the holistic wellbeing of athletes.

The webinar is not just a learning opportunity but also a call to action for all stakeholders in sports to foster environments that are supportive, inclusive, and responsive to the mental health needs of Black athletes.

Learning Objectives
Participants will: 

  • Gain insight to the best, culturally competent practices for supporting the mental health of Black athletes, inclusive of recognizing specific stressors and mental health challenges 
  • Examine systemic barriers and the potential for racial bias in mental health support systems
  • Explore the broader implications of effectively supporting Black athletes' mental health, including the impact of athletic performance, long-term mental wellbeing, and the role of mental health support in fostering inclusive and equitable sporting environments

CE Credit
This program has been approved for 1.25 CEUs in the area of Diversity to partially meet the continuing education recertification requirement for Certified Mental Performance Consultants® (CMPC).

About the Speakers

Dr. Chelsi Battle is a sport psychologist for Auburn University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Georgia State University, followed by a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Auburn University. Dr. Chelsi Battle takes an approach to clinical service that is rooted in cultural sensitivity by recognizing and exploring the unique challenges faced by athletes from marginalized communities and advocating for inclusive practices within collegiate sport organizations. Dr. Battle’s work emphasizes the importance of authenticity, self identity and celebrating cultural uniqueness.

Dr. Breigh Jones-Coplin, PsyD, is a sport psychologist, assistant professor, speaker and entrepreneur. She obtained her Master’s in Sport and Performance Psychology and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver's Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Breigh is currently the lead sport psychologist for USA Track and Field and supports a spectrum of elite and professional athletes in their mental well-being and performance in her private practice, Flourish Performance Psychology. Dr. Jones-Coplin's entrepreneurial spirit shines through her ownership and founder status of Black + Blossomed, LLC—a floral design company. Through this venture, she endeavors to showcase Black art, foster community thriving, and create meaningful connections between floral design and mental health. Her innovative approach involves developing curriculum that bridges the transformative power of flowers with mental health, revolutionizing the field. A sought-after facilitator and speaker, Dr. Jones-Coplin conducts enlightening workshops on healing and wellness for a wide range of businesses, teams, and organizations. She emphasizes the paramount importance of authenticity and love as guiding principles when navigating these profound topics, ensuring an inclusive and compassionate approach.
