ASSOCIATION FOR APPLIED SPORT PSYCHOLOGY RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FOR CERTIFIED MENTAL PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT® (CMPC) PROGRAM

CMPC Becomes Only Nationally Accredited Certification for Mental Performance Consultants

Indianapolis, IN (January 7, 2020) – The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP)—the leading organization for sport psychology consultants and professionals—announced that its Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC®) certification program has received accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

The CMPC program is the only nationally accredited certification for mental performance consultants in the world. AASP joins the 300+ NCCA-accredited programs that certify individuals in a wide range of professions and occupations including athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, counselors, nurses, and emergency technicians. Since 1977, the NCCA has been accrediting certifying programs based on the highest quality standards in professional certification to ensure the programs adhere to modern standards of practice in the certification industry.

“The CMPC mark recognizes the highest proficiency in our field,” said AASP President Natalie Durand-Bush. “Receiving NCCA accreditation for the CMPC certification program will instill confidence in clients and further increase the visibility and rigor of applied sport psychology services.”

AASP developed the CMPC credential to recognize the specialized knowledge and skill expected by athletes, coaches, and other performers (e.g., performing artists, military personnel, business executives). CMPCs make a difference by helping clients set goals, build resiliency, improve concentration, reduce performance anxiety, and enhance teamwork, to provide a few examples. Earning the CMPC credential is validation of the competencies needed for this specialized role by having passed through a rigorous application process. CMPCs complete graduate coursework, engage in supervised training, pass a comprehensive exam, adhere to a code of ethics, and commit to ongoing professional development to remain current on best practices.

Additional information about the CMPC certification program can be found on the Certification tab of the AASP website.
