Dr. Alan Chu’s primary areas of expertise are sport and exercise motivation, positive psychology, and psychological skills training. He conducts and publishes both quantitative and qualitative research in these areas, especially on the roles of social agents in motivation for sport, exercise, and education (see his work here: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Alan_Chu4).
Dr. Chu is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant and a member of the USOPC Sport Psychology and Mental Training Registry, working with athletes and coaches from high school to professional levels on psychological skills training and relationship building. Dr. Chu has been highly involved in sports, specializing in table tennis (not the basement “ping pong”!) as a competitive player and an internationally certified coach. He currently serves on the Coaching Committee of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association and teaches the coaching certification course.
Dr. Chu is passionate about applying science to practice while considering the cultural background and intersectionality of his clients. He is very open to working with athletes and coaches who are underrepresented or in nontraditional sports.
