AASP Newsletter - November 2020
November & December Diversity Announcements
In November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month (#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth) to honor the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and traditions of Native people, as well as to recognize the contributions Native Americans have made to the United States. To learn more about this history, please visit https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about/. Also, you can freely watch Native films at Vision Maker Media.
In addition to Native American Heritage Month, November is when we celebrate many cultural and religious holidays. One of these is Diwali, the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by many Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and others around the world. Diwali begins on November 14. November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honor those we have lost to anti-trans violence. Check out the link to learn about TDOR and find virtual events commemorating this day.
Many important dates fall in December, including World AIDS Day (#WorldAIDSDay) on December 1 and Human Rights Day on December 10. The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility. You can learn about human rights issues and organizations here. You may also view a free webinar on athlete abuse and find other resources related to sport and human rights on the Center for Sport and Human Rights webpage.

AASP's Diversity Committee is also currently seeking student and professional members!
The Diversity Committee works to ensure that AASP honors its commitment to diversity and creates an inclusive community for all our members. We define diversity broadly and include (but are not limited to) race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, nationality, physical capacities, and sexual orientation.
If interested in joining the committee, please send your CV/resume and a 1-page statement discussing 1) why you would like to serve on the committee and 2) how your talents and interests could benefit AASP membership by December 1, 2020 to info@appliedsportpsych.org and Amanda Perkins Ball, AASP Diversity Committee Chair, at amandaperkinsball@gmail.com.
