Spring Student Member Update

Kerry Guest Aidan Kraus

AASP Student Representatives
Kerry Guest (he/him/his), MS, CMPC, Indiana University
Aidan Kraus (they/them/theirs), EdM, Boston University

As springtime arrives, we want to acknowledge the challenges and sacrifices that our AASP community has faced as we continue to live through the COVID-19 pandemic, see increased movements for social and racial justice, act toward transgender and intersex rights, and fight for humanity across the globe.

Student Delegate Accomplishments and Initiatives

We have a group of seven new and returning student delegates who have been hard at work using their voices and knowledge to create some impressive content and resources for our AASP community. Over the past year, student delegates have presented workshops at the AASP Annual Conference, published pieces in the AASP Newsletter, and assisted in writing professional statements for social justice that have been highlighted on the AASP website. We will continue to promote upcoming events and resources that are created by our student delegates as we move forward this year. Further, we will share resources on working remotely and offer spaces to continue fruitful conversations surrounding diversity and inclusion. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Additionally, we have extended the deadline to apply to become a Student Delegate to May 1, 2022. Below are some additional updates and resources that may be of interest to AASP student members.

Resources for Students

As part of AASP student membership, there are several beneficial resources available, including full-text access to the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology (JASP), Journal of Sport Psychology in Action (JSPA), Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology (CSSEP), and Journal for Advancing Sport Psychology in Research (JASPR). Additionally, if you or someone you know is looking for graduate programs in sport and performance psychology, AASP's Directory of Graduate Programs in Applied Sport Psychology is a resource which includes information on over 100 graduate training programs in sport, exercise, and performance psychology. This directory can assist students in identifying programs of interest and determine which may be best aligned with their career goals. Further, the Student Development Committee offers several training and video resources for graduate students, including advice for choosing the right graduate program.

Don’t Wait to Get Involved. Start Now!

Are you interested in getting more involved with AASP? Look no further! There are numerous opportunities for students to become more immersed in the association:

  1. Become a conference abstract reviewer. This is an excellent way to learn more about conference program planning and evaluation. Indicate your interest in becoming a reviewer within the AASP Member Portal, which can be found on the top right of the AASP website homepage. Next, change your status in the “Reviewer Profile” section to “Yes, I can review abstracts for AASP 2022.”
  2. Get involved in AASP Regional Conferences. Attending an AASP Regional Conference is a great, cost-effective way to network with professionals and other students within the sport and performance psychology community. More information about the 2022 conferences can be found on the AASP Event Center
  3. Join one of the more than 25 AASP Special Interest Groups (SIGs). AASP SIGs focus on professional and scholarly topics within the field of sport and performance psychology. SIGs meet virtually throughout the year and at the Annual Conference to engage in outreach and projects relating to their respective sections (e.g., creating social media posts, conference presentations, or YouTube videos). Contact the SIG coordinator identified on the SIGs webpage if you are interested in joining a particular group.
AASP 2022 Annual Conference

Our upcoming 37th Annual Conference will be held in person from October 26-29, 2022, in Fort Worth, Texas and will also include a virtual option. Specific programming information will be posted on the AASP website and shared with the membership in June. Keep an eye out for registration information in July. The Annual Conference provides an opportunity for students to network and build community with professionals and other students as well as learn about the latest techniques and research within the field of sport and performance psychology. Every year, special student-focused events and sessions are highlighted including the Graduate Program and Career Fair. Additionally, this year there will be increased opportunities to engage in community outreach initiatives congruent with AASP’s commitment to social justice and equity. More information for students to get involved with these community initiatives will follow soon. We hope to see you there, in person, or virtually.

Both of us are honored to be Student Representatives of AASP and look forward to developing new opportunities and support for our student membership. We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming AASP Annual Conference in October. If you have any suggestions, inquiries, or are looking for more ways to get involved in AASP, please do not hesitate to contact Kerry and Aidan at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org
