Happy Summer 2018, student members! AASP continues to work diligently in expanding the value of AASP student membership and in creating opportunities for student engagement within the organization. As we enter the final stages of the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan, and reflect back on the past three years, we are motivated by all of the progress that has occurred. We are now heading into the formation of a new Strategic Plan, which is sure to bring even more growth for AASP and increased value to the student membership. Below you will find some information on changes coming this year, as well as important information regarding the Annual Conference this Fall.

Student Initiatives

New! Student Focused Journal. In response to a need within the organization, and with the support of the AASP Foundation, this year a new student-focused journal will be introduced. Please look out for more information about scholarship dissemination and for exciting opportunities to be a part of the editorial board. Also, if you have an innovative project or manuscript lead by a student author, keep your eyes open for a call for submissions in the coming academic year and consider submitting to this new AASP Journal!

Your Student Representatives and delegates have continued to develop content and resources for students about the field of applied sport psychology, including the Best Practices in Research and Best Practices in Consulting initiatives. View existing documents and resources created for students by students here.

AASP 2018 Annual Conference

The AASP 2018 Annual Conference, held from October 3-6, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a great opportunity to network with others in the field, expand your knowledge about sport psychology, and engage in professional development opportunities. Remember to bring your passport and check to ensure its expiration date is after October 6, 2018 if you are traveling from a country outside of Canada.

This year, there will be two professional development workshops offered specifically for students: Beginning Stages of Starting an Applied Business and Using Mindfulness to Enhance Sport Performance. Be sure to look for information on these exciting workshops, as well as a new and improved Student Challenge Initiative.

Resources for Students

One way to make the most of your membership is to use the resources available to you as an AASP member. Stay up to date on current research in the field by accessing the numerous journals published by AASP, including The Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport Psychology in Action, and Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Visit the Membership Benefits and Students’ Center for more information about available resources.

The Graduate Program Directory (12th edition) remains a top resource for students looking to gain information about graduate training opportunities in the field of applied sport psychology. Students can purchase a hard copy of the book or gain online access to the full Directory. You will find information about the Graduate Program Directory here.

Additionally, the AASP Career Center continues to be a helpful place on AASP’s website to learn about new job opportunities. You can find information here. Resources include resume writing tips, interviewing suggestions, guidance on advancing your career, and advice for making the most of digital resources like social profiles and networking sites.

Get involved!

There are several ways to get involved and make the most of your AASP membership. Annual and regional conferences are great opportunities to network with other members of the organization. Students can also consider joining Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in their areas of interest, and can join the virtual conversation on Facebook by requesting access to the AASP Student Facebook Group! This group is a resource for student members only, so if your full name is not visible on Facebook, please send a direct request for access to Courtney or Joanna at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org.

If you would like to get involved as a Student Delegate (https://appliedsportpsych.org/students-center/studentdelegates/), applications will be accepted for approximately 6 weeks after the annual conference in Toronto. Be on the lookout for more information regarding applications at that time.

Finally, if you have suggestions for improving student membership, feedback on your experiences within the organization, or are interested in becoming more involved in the organization, please contact Courtney or Joanna at studentrep@appliedsportpsych.org. We are happy to answer any questions you have and hope to connect with many of you in person this October!
