Dr. Coakley is a Sport and Performance Psychology Consultant, who specializes in training athletes in the fundamentals of mental preparation for training and competition. Her practice consists of teaching peak performance concepts, including but not limited to: building self-confidence, maintaining motivation, effective goal-setting, attention and emotion control, coping with stress, energy management, imagery, team building, coping with injury and sport career transitions. Her specializations include: sport career transition, injury and rehabilitation, body image, positive youth development through sport and physical activity and minorities in sport. Dr. Coakley earned both her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Sport and Exercise Science with a concentration in Sport Psychology from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Dr. Coakley works primarily with athletes and coaches at all levels of participation. She is a passionate consultant who trains, motivates and encourages individuals to apply the mental skills that they develop to enhance performances in all areas of life.
She is a member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) which promotes the ethical practice, science and advocacy of sport and exercise psychology. AASP is a worldwide leader, sharing research and resources with the public via its Web site www.appliedsportpsych.org. Dr. Coakley also is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), and a member of the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology and Mental Training Registry.
As a licensed professional counselor Dr. Coakley is qualified to treat clinical issues but her primary role is to help athletes develop key psychological skills and techniques to be used in during practice and competition to improve their overall performance and satisfaction with life.
In December 2017 Dr. Coakley was named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance in December, 2017. With the appointment, Dr. Coakley becomes the first full-time mental health specialist with the Temple University Department of Athletics. In her role she is responsible for the mental health and wellness of 525 student-athletes from 19 sports.
